  • Additional Name(s): Eastern Hemlock, White Hemlock, Spruce Hemlock, Canadian Spruce
  • Color: pale yellow or almost colorless

  • Scent: Pleasant balsamic scent that is sweet with fruity tones.

Action: Analgesic, antirheumatic, astringent, blood cleanser, stimulant, antibacterial, antifungal, Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antispasmodic, antiviral, decongestant, expectorant, mucolytic.

Benefits, Indications: Treats coughs, respiratory conditions, kidney ailments, skin conditions, urinary infections, venereal diseases. Recommended for relief of stress and anxiety. Also recommended for muscle aches and pains, aching joints, poor circulation. Inhaled for the respiratory system, helpful for bronchitis or asthma. Can be used in coughs, colds, flu, infection, muscle spasms, poor circulation, and respiratory weakness.

Tsuga essential oil obtained from hemlock spruce trees appears to display anti-cancer activity as found out in a study. In 2003, scientists at the Brigham University observed that a concentration of as little as 0.02% of Tsuga essential oil (derived from the Canadian hemlock tree) is effective to check the spread of cancer cells at breast and cervical metastatic sites.

It is also credited with being a spiritual oil – stabilizing while opening. In addition it’s uplifting to the emotions and many have found it beneficial for yoga and meditation.

Chemical Constituents: Terpene, pinene, limonene, bornyl acetate, tricyclene, phellandrene, myrcrene

Companion Oils: Pine, cedarwood, galbanum, benzoin, lavender, rosemary

Precautions: Spruce should be avoided during pregnancy. At low doses it appears to be nontoxic, non-irritating, and non-sensitizing. Not for use with children under six and use greater dilution in children over six.
