Skin-smoothing or exfoliating body scrubs can sure be expensive, and there are concerns that they contain harmful chemicals such as dyes, colors and fragrances. Why not make your own? They may be a lot healthier, and they’re certainly cheaper. Here are some recipes for skin-smoothing body scrubs.

From the Ground Up Body Scrub

Coffee grounds have a reputation for smoothing out cellulite-ridden areas of the skin. Their texture is also good for exfoliating, and you can’t beat the wonderful smell.

  • 1 cup coffee grounds (don’t get decaffeinated – it’s said that the caffeine helps the cellulite)
  • 1/4 cup sea salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon sweet almond oil

Simply mix these ingredients together. You can double the recipe if you like. Apply to damp skin with a circular motion, and rinse.

Cleansing Body Polisher with Olive Oil

  • 1 cup fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup melted M&P from Wal-Mart
  • 1/2 tsp.. peppermint essential oil

This one I just mixed all together. It made a thick paste (when it set up) that I put in a wide mouth jar to dip out with your fingers. I think I would use this more as a foot scrub or a hand/body scrub, but not on my face.

Chocolate-y Salt Body Scrub

Coarse kosher salt makes this a skin-smoothing scrub that gives skin a nice glow. The cocoa is supposed to have a smoothing action similar to the coffee grounds.

  • 2 cups kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup oil, such as sweet almond or jojoba
  • 1/4 cup apricot kernel oil
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Combine all ingredients and apply to damp skin with a circular, massaging motion and rinse.

Sugar Body Scrub with Yogurt

Yogurt and milk have been known for centuries to be good for the skin. Here is a recipe for a sugar body scrub with yogurt.

  • 1 cup coarse sugar, such as turbinado sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey
  • 3-4 drops essential oil of your choice (optional)

In an electric mixer, beat all the ingredients well until they are smooth and creamy. Apply as above.

Cleansing Body Polisher with Jojoba Oil

  • 1 cup fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup jojoba
  • 1/2 cup liquid soap
  • 1/2 tsp.. orange essential oil

I poured about 1 1/2 cups of boiling water over a bunch of grated homemade soap. I stirred it and smushed it until it cooled off enough to mush it with my hands. Then I poured it through one of those cone shaped colanders (used for canning) with the pestal that comes to a point at the end.

I pushed it through the strainer and then strained it again, this time removing most of the remaining soap particles. Then I measured 1/2 cup of the liquid to use in the Body Polisher recipe. This one came out liquidy and would work best in a plastic bottle with a flip top lid so you could pour it.

How to Make an Oatmeal and Almond Body Scrub

  • 1/4 cup finely ground oatmeal
  • 1/4 cup finely ground almonds

Stir well; place in clean dry container. To use place approx. 1 tbls of scrub in palm and add enough water to make a soft paste.

Massage into skin. Rinse well.

Almond, Rose and Honey Body Scrub Recipe

Salt is an excellent body scrub; almonds and honey help to moisturize while smoothing skin.

  • 1⁄2 cup finely ground almonds
  • 1⁄2 cup sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons almond oil
  • 2 tablespoons liquid honey
  • 5 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 5 drops rose essential oil

Mix all ingredients together in a small unbreakable container. Wet your body in a warm shower, and apply the scrub to your legs, arms and torso. Massage into your skin with a circular motion, rinse well and pat your skin dry. The oil in this body scrub makes the tub slippery, so use a rubber tub mat to prevent falls.

Natural Body Scrub

Combine equal amounts of the following:

  • Course Sea Salts, Fine Sea Salts
  • Epsom Salt
  • Add the following Oils to salt mixture to get slushy type mixture
  • Safflower Oil, Olive Oil
  • 20 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
  • or any essential oil you desire.

Blend all ingredients, well in a glass container. Massage onto body, prior to showering. Body should be soft and moist.

Oat and Brown Sugar Scrub

  • 2 Tbsp. ground oats
  • 2 tsp. brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. aloe vera
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice

Mix all ingredients in a clean bowl until you have a smooth paste. Gently massage onto damp skin, and rinse off with warm water. You can triple the recipe for a fantastic smoothing body treatment.

Ground Oats: use rolled oats and a clean coffee grinder or blender to grind the flakes to a fine powder.

Autumn Body Polish Recipe

  • 1/8 cup finely ground Sunflower seed meal (try using a coffee grinder)
  • 1/8 cup applesauce

Mix ingredients into a paste, then apply with gentle circular motions into your face, throat, chest, arms, and legs. Allow formula to remain on skin for 10 minutes so the Sunflower oils can be released and your thirsty skin can absorb them. Rinse with warm water and gently pat dry. Makes enough for one application

Homemade Sea Salt Exfoliator

Mix 1/8 cup of Olive Oil and 1 heaping tablespoon of sea salt. You can also mix with other oils such as sesame, avocado, hemp, jojoba, etc.

Use on knees and elbows in the shower and rinse off. Pat dry with a soft towel.

Salt Glow Formula

Inspired by Rosemary Gladstar’s Herbs for Natural Beauty (Storey Books, 1999).

This recipe is far too easy for the remarkable benefits it gives. Again, it is the simple gifts of life that are often the best. Salt glow is one of my favorite exfoliating treatments. It leaves the skin feeling silky soft and renewed, relaxed but refreshed.

Similar recipes are a favorite treatment at many famous and expensive spas. But it’s so wonderfully simple, inexpensive, and easy to do that you should try it at home. Invite a friend over for a “salt glow exchange.” It’s nicest to do it outside where you can rinse off the salt and not worry about getting it everywhere. For best storage, place in a cool area.

  • 2 cups fine sea salt
  • 4 cups grapeseed, apricot or almond oil
  • 20-30 drops essential oil of choice

Place salt in a widemouthed jar and cover with grapeseed, apricot, or almond oil. Scent with essential oil.

To use, dampen your entire body. Using either your hands or a loofah mit, vigorously but gently massage the salt and oil mixture into the skin. Begin at the feet and work upward in a circular motion. Be careful to avoid any scratched or wounded areas. When you have massaged the entire body, rinse with warm water. Finish with a dry-towel rub.
