Antiseptic Hair Rinse
Inspired by Better Basics of the Home, by Annie B. Bond (Three Rivers Press, 1999).
This marvelous formula relies on just three all-natural antifungal and antibacterial ingredients that combine to make a marvelously sweet-smelling and effective dandruff treatment. Some of us use it just because we love the way it smells and because it leaves our hair feeling so soft, bouncy, and shining.
- 8 ounces organic apple cider
- 2 ounces bay rum
- 10 drops essential oil of clove
In a pint mason jar with a screw lid, combine all the ingredients and shake thoroughly to blend. Use about 1/4 cup per treatment. Apply to hair immediately after shampooing and allow to remain on the scalp and hair for several minutes before rinsing thoroughly. This formula will keep indefinitely.
DIY Chamomile Hair Rinse
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 tsp. chamomile flowers
Pour the water over the chamomile flowers; steep until it cools a bit. Strain out the flowers. Effect: This rinse soothes and heals the scalp and gives hair a silky sheen. You can also use the rinse to lighten blonde hair.
Rosemary Hair Rinse for Dull Hair
- 4 tablespoons rosemary
- 2 cups water
Boil rosemary in water for 10 minutes. Strain; cool. Pour one cup over damp, shampooed hair. Massage into scalp. Rinse. Save the rest for another treatment.

Lavender Rose Herbal Hair Rinse
- 1 oz mixed herbs (Yarrow, Calendula, catmint, Horsetail, Parsley, stinging nettle and Lavender in equal portions, dried and crumbled)
- 1 pint water
- 1 pint Cider Vinegar
- 3 drops of lavender
- 6 drops of rose essential oils for fragrance
Place the dried herbs in a muslin bag or tea ball and put in a warmed tea pot. Pour boiling water over the herbs and infuse for several hours. Let it cool. Pour this into a quart jar, add the vinegar and oil and shake.
Hair Shine Rinse
Stir 1 teaspoon honey into 4 cups (1 quart) warm water. Blondes may wish to add a squeeze of Lemon. After shampooing, pour mixture through hair. Do not rinse out. Dry as normal for beautiful, shiny hair.
Beer Hair Rinse
If you want to do something nice for your hair, rinse it once a month with flat beer. After applying the beer, you can rinse the hair with warm water or not, as you choose.
The beer acts as a natural setting lotion, giving blow-dried hair increased vitality, resilience and hold. The B vitamins and natural sugar add body and shine. Don’t worry; the stale beer smell will disappear very quickly.
