Bedwetting is referred to in medical terms as Sleep Enuresis. Most children deal with bedwetting when they are first beginning to learn how to sleep through the night without wearing a diaper, and this is a relatively common occurrence for some ages until they develop the skills necessary to hold their bladders.
People who are of advanced age may also experience Sleep Enuresis as their bladder control weakens and they encounter other medical issues. Sleep Enuresis among adults who are otherwise healthy, however, is rare.
There are two different categories to Sleep Enuresis. Primary Enuresis occurs when a person has never had the ability to stay dry for the entire night.
This is not a common occurrence whatsoever with adults, because normal, healthy adults usually learn to control their bladders throughout the night when they are young, and it is a capability that does not usually deteriorate unless there is a medical or psychological reason behind it.
Secondary Enuresis occurs with people who once had the capability to control their bladders through the night, but for one reason or another lost the ability and began wetting the bed while they sleep. Both of these terms primary and secondary can apply to both children and adults.
Bedwetting can be extremely upsetting and embarrassing for adults. Many people will try to ignore this sleep disorder because they are too embarrassed to approach a doctor about the issue, or they fear that the bedwetting might point to a serious medical problem. While it certainly is a possibility that Sleep Enuresis might be indicative of a medical problem such as diabetes or heart disease, there may be other reasons for the bedwetting that are not related to a serious illness.
In fact, some drugs and chemicals might prompt the bladder to become overactive and may then lead to Sleep Enuresis. The only way to know for sure what is causing the bedwetting is to visit a doctor and have an evaluation completed.
If it becomes obvious that the instances of Sleep Enuresis are a direct result of a medical problem, the doctor will treat the problem and hopefully eradicate the Sleep Enuresis. If no medical problem is apparent then the doctor will probably explore other causes for the bedwetting at night.
In some cases, a metal health problem may be the culprit. If this is the case, then steps must be taken to treat the mental health issue before there is any hope of the Sleep Enuresis stopping. If there is no medical, psychological, or chemical reason why the adult is wetting the bed at night then a sleep expert might suggest some behavior modification programs.
Instances of these might include setting an alarm to wake up periodically throughout the night in order to visit the toilet to empty the bladder, or perhaps using a special sheet that sounds an alarm when urine is detected.
These methods are generally utilized with children, however, because instances of Sleep Enuresis in adults that are not related to another medical issue are quite rare.
