Basic Body Butter/Lotion Bar

  • 1 Part  Beeswax
  • 1 Part  Cocoa OR Shea Butter
  • 1 Part  Carrier Oil
  • 1 Part  Skin-Safe Fragrance or Essential Oil

Do not use both Cocoa Butter & Shea. Cocoa Butter will make a slightly harder bar, Shea Butter will make a slightly softer bar. Add Beeswax, Carrier Oil of choice and Butter of choice to a microwave safe container. A Pyrex Measuring Glass works best for cleanup purposes.

Melt in 20 second increments until all is melted. Stir well. Add Fragrance of Essential Oil, and stir well. Pour in a Melt & Pour Soap mold, Push Up Stick, or Deodorant Container and let harden overnight. This recipe can also be used for Lip Balm, by using a Skin-Safe Flavor Oil instead of the Fragrance of Essential Oil.

Cocoa Butter Dry Body Skin Complex

This thick, rich “complex” for dry skin is made with lots of cocoa butter and other oils designed to aid dry skin. While it is liquid at room temperature, it is rather thick and requires shaking a little before using.

I used unscented cocoa butter so I could add essential oils and not have to worry about a chocolate aroma, but you can use scented cocoa butter just as well if you like the aroma of chocolate. If you use unscented cocoa butter, you will enjoy the blend of essential oils … a fresh, clean and soothing combination.

  • 20 grams cocoa butter
  • 18 grams sesame oil
  • 18 grams extra virgin olive oil
  • 18 grams avocado oil
  • 1 drop  clary sage essential oil
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1 drop rose essential oil
  • 1 drop geranium essential oil

Place cocoa butter, sesame oil, olive oil and avocado oil in a heat proof (I use Pyrex) measuring cup, and place the cup in a saucepan of boiling water. Once the cocoa butter is nearly melted, remove the mixture from heat and stir with a clean spoon or pop sickle stick to mix well.

Make sure the cocoa butter is completely melted and mixed in. Add the essential oils next and stir well to incorporate. Pour the mixture into a glass bottle with a dropper top and dispense a little at a time to soothe and protect dry skin. In cooler climates, this Cocoa Butter Dry Skin Complex could harden a bit. If this happens, just warm it under warm water before using or store it in a sunny window to keep it pourable. Enjoy!

DIY Butter Bars – Lotion Bars

  • 4 ounces cocoa butter, shea butter or mango butter
  • 4 ounces beeswax, refined beads, yellow or white
  • 4 or 5 ounces liquid vegetable oil such as refined jojoba, sunflower or sweet almond*
  • 3 to 4 teaspoons of essential oil or fragrance oil of your choice
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons colored wax jojoba beads (optional)

Melt first butter and pour 4 ounces into 8oz Pyrex measuring cup.  Add 4 ounces of beeswax beads. (Total of 8 ounces in cup) Add colored jojoba beads if using.  Melt together in microwave.  Now add the liquid vegetable oil.

Use 4 ounces for a hard bar, which would bring your total to 12 ounces or 5 ounces for a softer bar for a total of 13 ounces.  Stir to mix thoroughly.  Add essential oil or fragrance oil when mixture has cooled slightly.  Pour into jars or small soap molds.  Pop out when cool, about two hours. For best results, put in refrigerator for a few minutes before popping out of mold.

*  Different carrier oils will give a different feel to your butter bars.  Lighter oils will absorb in to the skin quicker, heavier oils will be more moisturizing, but will take longer to absorb into the skin.

Uses:

  • Wet hands and rub with lotion bar
  • Rub on body when getting out of shower while still damp
  • Use as drawer sachet
  • Cut off a sliver and let melt in hot bath water
  • Massage into cuticles to soften them
  • Rub into elbows and knees
  • Massage – use softer bar recipe.

Coconut Orange Dry Skin Butter Recipe

Coconut Orange Dry Skin Butter is designed exclusively for the driest of skins. It’s perfect for body and I especially like to use it on rough areas like elbows and heels. The scent is a wonderful combination of fresh coconuts and orange.

  • 36 grams virgin coconut oil
  • 8 grams avocado oil
  • 1 gram orange flower wax (you may omit this ingredient)
  • 10 grams beeswax
  • 20 grams distilled water
  • 1/2 teaspoon borax
  • 10 drops sweet orange essential oil

Combine the virgin coconut oil, avocado oil, orange flower wax and beeswax in a large heat proof (I use Pyrex) glass measuring cup with a pour spout. Place the mixture in a hot water bath until the waxes are almost completely melted. If you do not have orange flower wax, just leave it out. You will not get as bright a golden color for your finished product, but the texture will be nearly the same.)

While the waxes are heating, place the water and borax in a separate Pyrex cup and warm for about 15 minutes in a hot water bath. Stir the water to make sure the borax fully dissolves into it. Once the waxes are melted, remove from heat and stir with a pop sickle stick to melt the wax into the warm oil.

After stirring the oils/waxes together to make sure they are evenly combined, begin stirring the oil/wax mixture with an electric mixer on medium speed and add the water mixture as you stir. You will see the mixture begin to thicken as you blend it. Continue mixing until until Coconut Orange Dry Skin Butter is thick and rich. This should take about 5-10 minutes at most.

You can also add the preservative of your choice to the cream by following the manufacturer”s instructions for use. If you do not use a preservative, your cream should last up to 2 weeks if you have used fresh ingredients and if you dispense it with a clean utensil (like a cosmetic spatula) and store it in a cool, dry place. Refrigeration between uses will extend shelf life. Enjoy!!

Luscious Pumpkin Body Butter Recipe

By Cait Johnson, author of Witch in the Kitchen (Inner Traditions, 2001). http://www.care2.com/

Ever get annoyed at the pumpkin puree left over from recipes that don’t use the whole can? Now there is something sublime you can do with it: whip up this luscious body butter, a beta-carotene feast to Moisturize, nourish, and smooth your skin.

Pumpkin Body Butter is easy to make, smells absolutely heavenly and does simply divine things for your skin. Pumpkins: they’re not just for pie anymore!

Pumpkin puree has enzymes and Antioxidants that offer results similar to gentle alpha hydroxy action: it removes dead dull cells, while its beta-carotene-rich Antioxidants nourish your skin. Coconut solids are a lovely natural Moisturizer, and ground Cinnamon is gently warming, stimulating, and Antibacterial.

  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, preferably Organic
  • 1/2 cup solids from a can of coconut milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground Cinnamon

Mix ingredients in a bowl. Apply generously to clean skin (standing or sitting on a towel, if you like), massaging gently to work well into the skin. Allow to remain on for 10 minutes or so, then rinse with warm water and pat dry.

Jojoba/Aloe Vera Moisturizing Cream

  • 25 g jojoba oil
  • 10 g beeswax
  • 0 g cocoa butter
  • 1 Tbsp vitamin E oil
  • 50 g aloe vera
  • 10 g glycerine
  • 20-30 drops essential oils
  • yield: about 4 oz.

Heat jojoba, beeswax, cocoa butter, and vitamin E in a double boiler to 160 degrees F. Mix aloe and glycerine in a second double boiler, also at 160 degrees. Then remove both mixtures from the stove and slowly drop the oil mixture into the aloe/glycerine mixture while stirring. Keep stirring until mixture cools to about 80 degrees F, then add essential oils and bottle.

Dreamy Creamy Moisturizer Recipe

Dreamy Creamy is exactly that! Use a little for normal to oily skin and a bit more if your skin feels dry.

  • 8 ounces distilled water
  • .1 ounce citric acid
  • .3 ounces stearic acid
  • .4 ounces virgin coconut oil
  • .3 ounces mango butter
  • .4 ounces avocado oil
  • 25 drops ylang ylang essential oil
  • 10 drops sweet orange essential oil
  • 10 drops rose geranium essential oil

In a heat proof cup (I use Pyrex) combine the water and citric acid. Place the mixture in a bath until for about 10 minutes to warm the mix and dissolve the citric acid. (The citric acid may not dissolve completely until you stir it in; see Step 4.) Remove from heat and set aside.

Combine all other ingredients (except essential oils) in a separate large heat proof cup with a pour spout. Place the mixture in a hot water bath until the waxes are nearly completely melted. Stir the oils/waxes together to make sure they are evenly combined. By the way, unrefined avocado oil has a green tint which may be slightly transferred to your finished product. You can use refined avocado oil or any other oil suitable for dry skin, such as jojoba oil.

In the separate container, stir the water ingredients to make sure they are evenly combined. Begin stirring the oil/wax mixture with an electric mixer and add the water mixture as you stir. You will see the mixture begin to thicken as you blend it. Continue mixing until Dreamy Creamy is fully formed and thickened a bit. Pour into clean jars and allow to cool before capping. It will thicken as it cools.

To prolong shelf life, you can refrigerate this product between uses. You can also use a cotton swab, spatula or anything besides your fingers to dispense the cream to prevent insertion of bacterial agents. Or you can add the preservative of your choice according to your supplier’s instructions for use.

DIY Belly Bar or Lotion

  • 1 1/2 oz beeswax (if making lotion omit the beeswax)
  • 2 oz shea butter
  • 2 oz cocoa butter
  • 2 oz sweet almond oil
  • 2 oz grapeseed oil
  • 2 oz olive oil

  • 1 oz Emu oil
  • 1 t. vitamin E
  • 1 T ground lavender
  • 1 T ground chamomile
  • 1 T ground calendula

I melted the beeswax, shea, and cocoa butter til melted. I added the ground herbs and stirred, stirred, stirred. When it was well blended. I added all the other oils and the vitamin E.

I stirred until it was cool and then added 60 drops lavender EO. It sat for about an hour until real cool and it set up kinda solid. (I could probably have done without the beeswax). I put it in the micro and added 2 more oz of grapeseed oil. That was just enough to make it a nice liquid. It is dark green, but when you apply it the color disappears.

How to Make Brilliant Belly Balm (Helps Stretchmarks!)

This very thick balm-like cream will soothe dry, itchy skin, especially as it stretches across the belly to accommodate the little one growing inside. You can use plain distilled water in place of the rose hydrosol if you are bothered by scents during your pregnancy.

  • 1 tablespoon cocoa butter
  • 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 tablespoon anhydrous lanolin
  • 2 teaspoons beeswax
  • 4 tablespoons rose hydrosol
  • 1 teaspoon borax
  • 1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin
  • 1/2 teaspoon grapefruit seed extract (optional, extends shelf life) or preservative of your choice

Combine butter, oils, lanolin and wax in a heat proof cup. Place the cup inside a pan of boiling water and melt the oils and waxes. Stir with a pop sickle stick, and once wax is melted, remove from heat. Place hydrosol (or water), borax and glycerin in a separate heat proof cup. Place the cup inside a pan of boiling water until the borax dissolves. Stir with a pop sickle stick to ensure the mix. Remove from heat.

Using a hand-held electric mixer, begin mixing the oils and waxes. Add water mixture and blend on medium speed until Brilliant Belly Balm forms, about 3 minutes. Pour mixture into sterilized cosmetic jars and cap after a few minutes. Store in refrigerator between uses to extend shelf life (especially if you do not use a preservative) and dispense with a cosmetic spatula or pop sickle stick to avoid dipping your fingers in the mixture and increasing chances of contamination.

  • 1 tsp. beeswax
  • 1 tsp. cocoa butter
  • 1 tsp. coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup distilled water
  • 1 tsp. aloe vera gel
  • 1/2 tsp. glycerin
  • 5 drops jasmine fragrance oil

Melt the butter blend in the oil over low heat then allow to cool. Measure the water, aloe vera gel and glycerin into a deep bowl. Slowly drizzle in a small amount of the oil mixture and beat vigorously with a wire whisk. Continue to drizzle and beat until all the oil is blended into the water. Stir in five drops of jasmine fragrance. Pour into a container, label and enjoy.

How to Make an Easy Lotion Bar

  • 100ml  coconut oil
  • 75g  beeswax
  • 100ml  sweet almond oil
  • 2.5ml  fragrance oil

Gently melt beeswax & coconut oil together in double boiler. Remove from heat but keep over the warm water. Add sweet almond oil and fragrance oil. Stir until clear. Pour in molds & let set (about 1/2 hour).

Voila!! Very easy, no complicated ingredients and works great. Note, this recipe not originally my own – found it on the WEB (sorry, cant remember where). I did change the original beeswax measure from 100g to 75g as I found the bar to be too hard with 100g of wax. Hope you like it.

Almond Body Oil Recipe

  • 2 cups yellow flowers from the herb Mullein
  • 2 cups Almond oil

Mix in a clean glass jar. Let sit for two weeks. Strain and apply the resulting oil to the skin. This makes skin smooth and supple. It is also good for dry, flaky skin.

Cinnamint Body Lotion

  • 62 grams coconut oil
  • 56 grams sweet almond oil
  • 20 grams  extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 grams cocoa butter
  • 4 grams shea butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon  stearic acid
  • 6 grams beeswax
  • 98 grams distilled water
  • 16 grams  vegetable glycerin
  • 1/2 teaspoon borax
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon leaf essential oil
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint essential oil

Combine the coconut oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, stearic acid and beeswax in a large heat proof (I use Pyrex) glass measuring cup with a pour spout. Place the mixture in a hot water bath until the waxes are completely melted. Remove from heat.

In a separate Pyrex cup, combine the water, glycerin and borax. Place the mixture in a bath for about 10 minutes to warm the mix and dissolve the borax. (The borax will not dissolve completely until you stir it in) Remove from heat. Stir the oils/waxes together to make sure they are evenly combined.

In the separate container, stir the water ingredients to make sure they are evenly combined. Begin stirring the oil/wax mixture with an electric mixer on medium speed and add the water mixture as you stir. You will see the mixture begin to thicken as you blend it. Continue mixing until until Cinnamint Lotion is thick and rich. I have found that blending for anything less than 20 minutes does not allow enough time for the rich texture to fully form. Add the essential oils after the lotion forms and stir gently to incorporate. Pour into clean bottles.

DIY Cold-Weather Cream

Adapted from Natural Beauty Basics, by Dorie Byers (Vital Health Publishing, 2005).

This all-purpose cream is great as an allover moisturizer, or as a makeup remover. One great way to use it is to apply before taking a bath or shower, so heat from the steamy water allows the moisturizing properties to soak into your skin. At the end of your bath or shower, just wipe it off. You can have moist, soft skin even in cold weather with this elegant emollient formula:

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
  • 1 tablespoon shea butter
  • 1 tablespoon rosewater
  • 2 teaspoons grated beeswax
  • 1/4 teaspoon liquid lecithin
  • 800 IU Vitamin E
  • 3 drops German chamomile essential oil

In a separate container, mix the aloe vera gel and rosewater and set aside. Place the olive oil, shea butter, and beeswax together in a heatproof container over boiling water. Remove from the heat source after the mixture has melted. Add the Vitamin E and liquid lecithin and mix well. Combine this mixture with the aloe vera gel and rosewater mixture, stirring with a whisk to combine thoroughly. While the mixture is cooling, add the essential oil. Store in a wide-mouth jar.
