Sesame-Coconut Protein Hair Conditioner

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons light sesame oil
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 2 tablespoons coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil

Blend all ingredients. Shampoo hair as normal, rinse and apply mixture. Leave on hair for at least 20 minutes. I use a shower cap to keep the mixture a bit warm and at times wear it overnight.

Oil Treatment for Damaged Hair

  • 15 drops Rosewood
  • 5 drops Geranium
  • 5 drops Sandalwood
  • 5 drops Lavender
  • 10 ml. Jojoba

Combine with 3 Fl. Oz. (75 ML) vegetable oil (I like Olive Oil). Apply to shampooed and rinsed hair and wrap in hot towel. Leave on 15-20 minutes for a deep conditioning hair treatment. Rinse well. You can also put on a plastic shower cap and leave this on overnight and rinse in your morning shower.

DIY Deep Conditioning Hair Masks

You may have heard of facial masks, but your hair can benefit from a mask as well. The good news is, you don’t have to spend a lot of money or buy a lot of chemical-laden products to make an effective hair mask.

Coconut Oil Hair Mask

Coconut oil is popular for skin and hair. It is solid when you buy it in a jar, so you will need to liquefy it. Put about a tablespoon (the amount for medium-length hair of average thickness) of the oil into a small zip-top bag, such as a sandwich bag. Submerge the sealed bag into a mug or bowl of very warm water.

When the coconut oil is liquid, comb it through your hair as evenly as possible. Some sources suggest using a clean, household paintbrush to spread the mask evenly over your hair.

Cover with a shower cap and leave it on for about 15 minutes, then wash it out.

Variations: Use almond or olive oil instead of coconut. You can also add a beaten egg to the oil for extra conditioning.

Banana Hair Mask

Bananas getting too ripe? Use them on your hair. In a blender, combine one ripe, peeled banana, one egg, 2 tablespoons of honey, 1/4 cup of milk and 1/4 cup of almond or olive oil.

Work this thoroughly through your hair and cover it with plastic wrap or a shower cap. Leave it on for about 15 minutes before washing out. This recipe makes rather a lot of mask, so try freezing leftovers and thawing for another go-round.

Avocado Hair Mask

With their high fat content, avocados are good hair tonics. Mash one ripe avocado and add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a tablespoon of olive or coconut oil. Like the other hair masks, this one is best if left on for at least 15 minutes, with your hair covered during that time.

Oil and Vinegar Hair Mask

Like a good salad dressing, oil and vinegar works well for your hair, too. Mix 2 tablespoons of honey with a tablespoon each of almond oil and apple cider vinegar. Blend it well with a whisk. Then work into your hair, cover, and leave it on for 15-20 minutes.

Bentonite Clay Hair Mask

This volcanic ash is especially good for curly hair. Simply mix 2 tablespoons of bentonite clay with enough water to make a paste. Spread over hair and work it in thoroughly. Cover your hair with a shower cap and use a blow dryer on the outside of the cap to heat it up. Let your hair cool. Then wash the clay out with a mild shampoo.

Bulgarian Rose Hair Mousse

Bulgarian Rose Hair Mousse is specifically formulated for people with dry and brittle hair; it’s especially good for people with textured hair. I do not recommend it for people with straight or thin hair as it is quite a greasy treatment.

  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
  • 1/16 teaspoon Bulgarian rose concrete

Make sure all ingredients are room temperature. The coconut oil should NOT be cold because you do not want to have to heat this mixture up. It should not be a liquid consistency when you use it. Instead, it should be rich and thick. Measure the coconut oil into a bowl and stir well. The heat from your mixing will raise the temperature of the oil so that it obtains a smooth, thick texture.

Add the jojoba oil and stir more to make sure the mixture is even and well mixed. Add the concrete last. You don’t have to use Bulgarian rose, that’s just my favorite. You can use the rose concrete from Morocco, Turkey or wherever you get it from.

Stir all of the ingredients together to form a thick, rich oily mixture. To use, apply to dry hair from roots to ends paying special attention to the dry areas. To facilitate penetration of the oil, you can do one of two things. First, you can cover your hair with a plastic bag or hair bonnet and sit under a dryer for 30 minutes, then wash and condition as usual. Second, you can cover your hair with a plastic bag or hair bonnet and then use a blow dryer to saturate your hair with the heat which will help the oils penetrate. Then, wash and condition as usual.

This mixture will leave your hair shiny, and use over time will improve its condition.

DIY Sandalwood Hair Wrap for Dry, Damaged Hair

The Sandalwood Hair Wrap is a great way to treat your hair, especially if it’s dry and brittle. Olive oil is wonderful for hair of all types. The combination of ingredients and exotic aromatics will leave your hair feeling healthy and conditioned, and wonderfully scented.

  • 3 drops sandalwood essential oil
  • 1drop cedar wood essential oil
  • 1 drop lavender essential oil
  • 1 drop jasmine absolute

Just blend the ingredients in a glass measuring or mixing bowl. Stir gently with a clean plastic utensil or pop sickle stick to incorporate. To use, wet your hands and then apply Sandalwood Hair Wrap to damp hair. Wrap hair in a towel and leave it for 15 minutes. Remove the towel and give yourself a nice scalp massage. Shampoo and rinse. You can double or triple the recipe for longer or more textured or dry hair.

Russian Hair Treatment Pack

This is better than a simple hot oil treatment. It leaves the hair looking stunning-thick, luxuriant, and shiny. The effects last a long time, even the light scent of the essential oil will linger through several shampoos.

  • 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon oil (Safflower, Almond, coconut, or walnut
  • 1 drop essential oil (Lemon, Tangerine, Jasmine, rose, Sandalwood, Rosemary)

Before applying, moisten the hair very slightly by running wet fingers through it, then massage the egg mixture into hair and scalp. Wrap head in a towel (and plastic if desired) and sit back in a sauna, take a long hot bath, or relax in a warm place. (The heat of a sauna is the best environment for this treatment.) Leave the pack on for one hour, if possible, even two or three!

To cleanse, rinse hair in warm water, then apply a lot of shampoo directly to the hair, wash well, and rinse. If you’ve used enough shampoo, only one wash is needed.

Jasmine Hair Honey Recipe

  • 1/8 cup jojoba oil
  • 1 egg yolk (room temperature)
  • 2 tablespoons runny honey
  • 1 drop  jasmine absolute

Warm the jojoba oil in the microwave for 30 seconds. Add the room temperature egg yolk and beat well to mix. (Make a small, healthy omelet out of the egg white or use it to tone and condition oily skin!).  Next, add the runny honey and mix to incorporate. Add the drop of jasmine absolute last and stir well.

Apply Jasmine Hair Honey to dampened hair and allow to remain on your hair for at least 30 minutes. If you can, sit under a dryer for at least that long so the mixture can penetrate the hair shaft as much as possible. You can leave Jasmine Hair Honey on for as long as you please to condition your hair. The longer it stays on before rinsing, the more fragrant your hair will be.

After at least 30 minutes, wash your hair and style as usual. (I used an unscented shampoo so I could still smell the jasmine!). Remember to double or triple the recipe for longer hair. Also, use Jasmine Hair Honey on the same day you make it due to the fresh egg yolk.

Home Remedy Recipe for Dry Damaged Hair

Here is a combination of essential oils that can be applied as a hair treatment once a week for dry or damaged hair.

  • Olive oil
  • Oil of Sandalwood
  • Oil of Lavender
  • Oil of Geranium

Mix five to ten drops of each of the oils into about 1/2 cup of the olive oil. You can warm the oil slightly before using if you wish.

Apply the mixture to your wet hair and leave this on for 20 minutes before shampooing it out. A good way to keep from getting the oil everywhere is to tip your head over the bathtub, apply the oils and massage through the ends of your hair, then put a plastic cap or small, warm, wet towel over your hair and do other things for 20 minutes.

Put together in a medium bowl and squish together with your hands until it’s a minty green color. Smooth into hair all the way to the tips. Put on a shower cap or wrap your head with saran wrap. Leave on for 20 minutes.

Sweet Treatment for Damaged Hair

Here is a one-ingredient formula that may surprise you, but it has amazing nourishing and repairing properties for damaged hair.

If you spent too many hours this summer in a pool, in the sun, or getting tangles from harsh salty sea air–or if you have damage from bleaching or blow-drying–this sweet solution will help restore your hair to soft, shiny, bouncy glory.

The secret is blackstrap molasses. It may sound kind of sticky and gooey to use, but it smells sweet and it will give your damaged locks a nourishing treat.

Simply massage about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of blackstrap molasses (depending on the length of your hair) into your tresses, then cover with a shower cap and allow it to set as long as possible (for an hour or even more, if you can.) Rinse with warm water.

Super Body Deep Conditioner

  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 2 tablespoons unflavored gelatin
  • 1 tablespoon sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tablespoon stale beer

Combine ingredients in a small bowl. Comb or brush into hair. Cover hair with a plaster shower cap or wrap with a Sheet of plastic wrap. Cover with a thick terrycloth towel. Leave the treatment on for 30 minutes, then rinse in warm water. Shampoo the hair.

Home Remedies for Dry, Damaged Hair from the Cupboard & Fridge

If your hair has the moisture content of the Mojave Desert and nothing short of dipping your mane in a bucket of oil seems to correct the problem, here are a few home remedies that can make that brittle hair supple and shiny again.

Nuts and seeds

Try snacking on some seeds and nuts. They contain essential fatty acids that can pop that sheen right back into your hair.

Vinegar

There are several ways you can help your dry hair with vinegar. Vinegar is a great conditioner and can improve cleanliness and shine.

  • Just add 1 tablespoon vinegar to your hair as you rinse it. Keep a travel-size plastic bottle of vinegar in your shower for this purpose, and take one when you travel, too.
  • Since dandruff can make your hair look dull, use vinegar to make dandruff disappear.
  • Massage full-strength vinegar into your scalp several times a week before you shampoo. Or, a brief soak in vinegar and water before you shampoo can help control dandruff as well as remove the dulling buildup from sprays, shampoos, and conditioners.
  • Add 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar to a small basin of water and drape your hair into it. As an alternative, you can put the concoction in a spray bottle and apply it to your hair.
  • A conditioner that controls dandruff and gives your hair a healthy shine can be made by mixing 2 cups water and 1/2 cup vinegar. Apply the conditioner after rinsing out your shampoo, and let it stay on your hair for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water.
  • If you need a stronger treatment for dandruff control, use this same method, but keep the rinse on your hair for 1 hour, covered with a shower cap. Then rinse it out. This vinegar rinse will also help control frizziness in dry or damaged hair.

Avocado and banana

Mash a little overripe banana and avocado together, spread in your hair, and leave it there for up to an hour. Then rinse with warm water.

Beer

After your shampoo, rinse your hair with a little beer. This can help restore shine.

Eggs

To clean hair and give it a super shine, whip an egg into tepid water (not too hot or you’ll be dealing with a poached egg), then lather it into your hair. Rinse it out with tepid water or that egg will poach right on top of your head.

To deep-treat damaged hair, give it a healthy sheen, and cure dryness right down to the roots, use this pre-shampoo conditioning treatment: Mix together 3 eggs, 2 tablespoons olive oil or safflower oil, and 1 teaspoon vinegar. Apply it to your tresses, cover with a plastic cap, and leave it on for 30 minutes. Then shampoo as usual.

Mayonnaise

You’ll need the full-fat kind, not a diet or low-fat version. Slather 1 tablespoon or so onto your hair, rub it in down to your scalp, then cover with a plastic cap and wait about 30 minutes. Rinse it out thoroughly or you’ll be craving tuna salad the rest of the day.

Oil

Rub a little oil into your scalp. Olive oil works well, as does coconut oil. After you rub it on, cover your hair with a cap and leave it on overnight, then shampoo and rinse the oil out in the morning.
