DIY Natural Shampoo Recipes

Shampoo for Bounce and Shine

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Lemon juice
  • 3 tbsp unscented shampoo
  • Fragrance oil of your choice

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Shampoo into your hair and rinse well. The egg will act as a conditioner, and the Lemon juice will bring shine to your hair!

Cedarwood and Rosemary Shampoo

  • 2oz. Unscented or Baby Shampoo
  • 10 drops Cedarwood, Virginia Red Essential Oil
  • 10 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Jojoba Natural

I make this in small quantities because I do not want my body to become “bored” with the same oils loosing their effect. When this shampoo is used up I will substitute the Cedarwood for Sweet Birch Essential Oil and the Rosemary for Lemon Essential Oil. The Sweet Birch encourages hair growth and the Lemon just brightens my natural blonde highlights. Any combination of these oils can be used. Rosemary and Lemon are good together as well.

Soapwort Herbal Shampoo Recipe

This is a very fragrant and stimulating for your scalp. It prevents dandruff and promotes hair growth. Take 1 cup of each of the following and boil them and let them reduce themselves in 2 cups H20. Do not use metal pans….I use an old Mr. Coffee pot or a vision clear glass pan.

  • Nettle
  • Spearmint
  • Rosemary
  • and for a rich chestnut appearance cloves

Let them steep for at least 2 hours…strain and the liquid left will be very dark brown. Mix these with the shampoo at a 1:1 combination….if you want a darker color add just a little more rosemary and cloves. Pour into bottles and let it set overnight. In the morning you can add a couple drops of your favorite EO to add fragrance….

For the soapwort recipe take 2 handfuls of soapwort to the glass pan and pour over it 1-1 1/2 cups water. Bring this to a boil and lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Cover it and let it steep until cool strain it into a bottle that closes tightly. When you add the nettle, rosemary, spearmint and cloves let it infuse for at least 60 minutes…I prefer to let it infuse over night. every time you use it, it needs to be shaken. This won’t give you a head full of suds as commercial ones will but the cleansing is undeniable. Soapwort is nothing more that Wild Sweet William.

You can add fennel to it as well then it would condition as well. For lighter hair substitute the rosemary for chamomile and the cloves for lemon or lemongrass.

Best Shampoo Bar Recipe

  • 2 oz Castor Oil
  • 2 oz Jojoba Oil
  • 8 oz Soybean Oil
  • 12 oz Distilled Water
  • 8 oz Coconut Oil
  • 12 oz Olive Oil
  • 4.3 oz NaOH (Lye)

Measure oils and put in crock. Turn on low. Measure water and lye. Mix outside. Put lye water mix in crock, bring to trace and let cook 30 minutes, stirring a couple times. Then stir down, cook another 15-30 minutes (Coconut Oil makes this thing cook faster than I thought before)and constantly stir. Make sure your molds are ready and when at mashed potatoe stage, add your fragrance oil (fo). Depending on fragrance or essential oil, use 1 tbsp at a time until you get what you want. Mold, unmold, cut and let cure 3-7 days. It’s ready to go after that.

Desert Wonder Shampoo for Extremely Dry Hair

This shampoo is great for people who live in dry areas –

  • 1/4 cup Basic Shampoo
  • 1/4 cup aloe vera gel
  • 1 tsp glycerine
  • 1/2 tsp avocado oil

Mix all of the ingredients together.  Pour the shampoo into a container with a tight fitting lid.  Shampoo as normal but leave on an extra few minutes. Rinse with cool water. The aloe vera plant is sometimes called the “wonder of the desert” because of it’s many uses, especially as a moisturizer.

Note: this shampoo may separate; always shake well to remix before using.

DIY Dry Shampoo

Cornstarch is used to absorb the hair’s oils.

  • 1/2 cup Cornstarch

Sprinkle the cornstarch in your hair, let it absorb for a few minutes, brush it out. This is great if you are in a pinch.

Castile Shampoo Recipe

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 bars castile soap, grated (or other gentle complexion soap)
  • 1 ounce glycerin
  • 3 drops perfume
  • 1 ounce chamomile tea

How to Make Homemade Shampoo with Essential Oils

  • 7 oz. of unscented shampoo (many sellers of natural products and aromatherapy products sell unscented shampoo, shower gel and lotion)
  • 1 tablespoon Jojoba (optional, but can supply the hair with added nutrition)
  • 20 drops Patchouli
  • 20 drops Sandalwood
  • 5 drops Ylang Ylang

Add the essential oils to the bottle of unscented shampoo (you may wish to either use the unscented shampoo once to make more room in the bottle for the oils or discard a little bit) and mix extremely well.

You do not want to have pockets in the shampoo where the oils collect as the Concentration of essential oils could cause scalp irritation and also because your shampoo will not be fragranced thoroughly. Use as you would your normal shampoo.

  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap
  • 1/2 teaspoon sunflower oil or any light vegetable oil

Mix the ingredients together and shampoo hair as usual. Although this shampoo may be thinner than commercial products, it produces a nice lather, thanks to the castile soap.

Chamomile Fields Shampoo Recipe

This shampoo smells similar to apples. Chamomile is well known for its healing properties, is also very effective as a shampoo. It has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Either annual (Matricaria recutica) or perennial Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) species can be used.

  • 4 bags of Chamomile tea (or 1 handful of fresh Chamomile flowers)
  • 4 tablespoons pure soap flakes
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons glycerin*

Let the tea bags steep in 1 1/2 cups of boiled water for 10 minutes. Remove the tea bags and with the remaining liquid add the soap flakes. Let stand until the soap softens. Stir in glycerin until mixture is well blended. Pour into a bottle. Keep in a dark, cool place.

DIY Natural Conditioner Recipes

Spray Leave-In Hair Conditioner, Detangler

  • 4 oz Aloe Vera juice
  • 3 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
  • 3 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 2 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil

Put Aloe Vera juice into a 4 oz sprayer bottle. Add essential oils to the mixture – you can leave out the Rosemary and substitute it for Grapefruit EO if you like (supposed to be better for blondes). You can also leave out the Grapefruit EO if you like.

This isn’t oily or sticky on my hair. I apply it after getting out of the shower – just shake and spray onto damp hair. Dry hair like normal. The Rosemary “green” scent will fade as the hair dries. I use this to help as a detangler, and it leaves my hair feeling soft, but not greasy.

Jojoba Hair Conditioner

Herbal hair conditioners help make hair more manageable and often impart a smoother and softer texture. They are especially good for those who use hot rollers, curling irons, and blow dryers.

  • 1 cup rose Hydrosol
  • 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
  • 10 drops vitamin E oil (optional!)

In the top of a double boiler, gently warm the rose water. Once rose water is warm, add jojoba oil. For damaged hair or extra conditioning, leave on for several minutes, perhaps while bathing. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Shampoo lightly and rinse again with cool water.

Yield: 1 treatment for long hair (cut recipe in half for short hair)
